Natural News January 1999 - Ounce of Prevention
It‘s a job to stay well during the winter. Often it seems the odds are against us, but natural products used wisely can help. It is the American way to take action only after we start to feel bad. However, more people each year come to the realization that there must be a better way to handle winter‘s onslaught.

Natural News February 1999 - Homeopathic Remedies
How many times have you wished for a safer, quicker and more effective medicine? Homeopathic remedies offer all of these qualities. I hope you will visit your local independently operated natural food store and check them out. Ask for your free booklet, Smart Guide to Homeopathy, and take advantage of this system of remedies.

Natural News March 1999 - Weight Loss
Weight loss is never easy. However, it seems like it ought to be easier in the summer...You’re outside doing more things, eating lighter than you do in winter, and yet it’s already August and those pounds have not come off!

Natural News April 1999 - Diet Season
Diet season is here, along with the usual claims of easy weight loss. So before you go to buy the latest "sure thing," I want to give you a little primer on diets and diet products.

Natural News May 1999 - Allergies
Are you are your family members suffering with allergies this spring? No matter where else they’ve lived, most people agree that Maryland can be an allergy sufferer’s nightmare whether it is spring, summer or fall. Fortunately, there are options beyond the usual fare of decongestants and anti-histamines. You’ll find remedies that are safe and effective for both children and adults, without the side effects of some other over-the-counter medicines, at your local independent natural foods store.

Natural News June 1999 - Safe Summer Tips
The sun is out and summer is in full swing now. It’s time to be thinking about sunscreen and bug repellant, and let’s not forget "what to do about poison ivy." Most folks buy the first two almost reflexively and worry about the third only when they catch it. However, your skin, as your largest and primary protective organ, really deserves better, don’t you think?

Natural News July 1999 - Conference Notes
It isn’t often that you find 17 top people in herbal therapeutics all in the same place. However, when I attended the Medicines from the Earth conference in early June, that is exactly what I found. The conference was held in Black Mountain, North Carolina amidst the Blue Ridge Mountains just northeast of Asheville. Since there were certain supplements or therapies all the presenters thought were important, I think its worthy of a recap here.

Natural News August 1999 - SAMe
Recently, the amino acid supplement SAM has been getting a lot of press. SAM (or SAMe) stands for S-adenosyl-methionine. It functions in the brain and the liver, primarily as a methyl donor. In a process called methylation, a methyl group (a carbon atom with three hydrogen atoms attached to it) is added to or removed from another molecule. Our bodies regulate many processes with methylation.

Natural News September 1999 - Back on Tract
When it comes to colloquial advice concerning diet, the phrase "you are what you eat" comes instantly to mind. It sticks because it is basically true, with one important qualifier. The key to this truth is your digestion. When digestion runs smoothly, we gain nutrients and caloric energy from our food. Unfortunately, many of us have lost our digestive powers to stress, inattention and poor food choices.

Natural News October 1999 - Bach Flower Remedies
A couple of months ago I spent a weekend learning about an unusual group of remedies. They have become standards in most independent natural foods stores, but in spite of this many people are not familiar with them. These mysterious remedies are the Bach Flower Essences.

Natural News November 1999 – Women’s Health
Increasingly, women are seeking alternative treatments for some of the health issues they face. These include PMS symptoms, peri-menopausal symptoms, and recurrent bladder infections and cystitis.

Natural News December 1999 – Flu and Cold Season
As winter approaches, I see more and more people who have been caught by an -early wave of the flu or colds. So, I have been searching my arsenal for remedies that take the edge off. I have rediscovered some homeopathic medicines that perhaps you can make use of in the months to come. Remember that homeopathy offers you a way to get well without side effects, and without worrying about interactions between other medicines and natural products like herbs.

Natural News January 2000 - Sports Supplements and Teenagers: Nature or Nuture or Both
If you have teenage kids, sooner or later you may have to decide whether certain “hot” sport supplements are appropriate for them. Often, the hot new supplement gathers steam in the general media, is hyped by sport related magazines and before you can even pronounce it correctly, your son or daughter is telling you that all their friends take it and they want it too.

Natural News February 2000 - Antioxidants
Antioxidants. You know they’re good for you, but do you know why. “Antioxidant” has been given a suitably vague meaning roughly synonymous with “anti-aging” by media and advertisers looking to sell you something. However, this is not a particularly useful definition when it comes to choosing foods and supplements. Lets take a look at what antioxidants do and at the various classes of antioxidants.

Natural News March 2000 - Natural Remedies for Asthma
You’re gasping for air and with every breath it seems you are less able to exhale! It begins to feel like you are breathing through a wall of water, just barely able to get the next breath before you feel like you’re going to suffocate. This is asthma and it’s becoming more and more common. Children and older women are the most likely sufferers, especially those of African and Hispanic descent. Risk factors include family history...

Natural News April 2000 - Bruising 101
Do you bruise easily, even without feeling it? Do you or an older loved one have paper thin skin that shows off blood clot like bruises with even the slightest injury? You may be in need of bioflavonoids.

Natural News May 2000 - Part 1 - Does Heart Disease Run In Your Family
Does heart disease run in your family? It may not be something you want to acknowledge, but if your closest relatives have had heart attacks, strokes or surgery to bypass or restore blocked arteries you may find yourself in the same boat eventually. In Natural News for May and June, I will be exploring some of the options you have to protect or restore your cardiovascular health.

Natural News - June 2000 - Part 2 - Keeping Your Heart Healthy
This month we continue our discussion of what you can do to keep your heart healthy. Last month we began with diet and exercise. This month we take a look at herbs and other supplements, which support the cardiovascular network.

Natural News July 2000 - Part 3 - Types of Formulas
For the past two months now we have been discussing supplements that benefit cardiovascular health. Before we close this chapter, I want to tell you about some of the types of formulas that are available and how they may be helpful.

Natural News August 2000 - Fats
Do you feel that when the subject of dietary fats comes up you are always being told something different? Many people do, and it is easy to see why. In the ‘70’s, fats like margarine were supposed to be our saviors because they were made from unsaturated fats. Now, margarines are out because they are “trans fats.” In the 80’s, low fat diets were all the rage and Pritikin disciples like Dr. Dean Ornish were hailed as being on the cutting edge.

Natural News September 2000 - Mushrooms
Recently, the subject of medicinal mushrooms has intrigued me. Although there is ample documentation of the various benefits of these fungi (pronounced fun-jai), I had not found a comprehensive source for them. Enter Ecclectic Institute. This company offers a variety of single mushroom extracts and two compelling combinations, one of seven mushrooms, named for the producer Paul Stamets, and the other, a combination of the evolutionarily more ancient group known as polypores.

Natural News October 2000 - Fall Allergies
Are you and your family members suffering with allergies this season? No matter where else they’ve lived, most people agree that Maryland can be an allergy sufferer’s nightmare whether it is spring, summer or fall. Fortunately, there are options beyond the usual fare of decongestants and anti-histamines. You’ll find remedies that are safe and effective for both children and adults, without the side effects of some other over-the-counter medicines, at your local independent natural foods store.

Natural News November 2000 - Vitamin B6
Vitamins and minerals act as co-factors in biochemical reactions that must go on unimpeded for us to live healthily. When we take vitamin supplements we are paying tribute to this fact, but on a day-to-day basis it is easy to miss the finer points surrounding it. Sometimes, when the body is struggling to maintain health, nutrients can do more to combat a range of symptoms than can medication.

Natural News December 2000 - Healthful Resolutions
This month I have a few suggestions for healthy habits you can incorporate into your new year’s resolutions. If you keep them in mind throughout the year, I guarantee you will feel better and that way you will want to stick with them.

Natural News February 2001 - Lungs
This season brings with it all kinds of upper and lower respiratory ailments, so let’s talk about a few ways to ward off most of them.

Natural News March 2001 - New Products
We have recently expanded the store where I work, and with that comes the opportunity to bring in new products. So, rather than focusing on a specific topic this month, I thought I would tell you about some to these products that I am excited to have access to.

Natural News April 2001 - Multi's
Every once in a while it’s a good idea to re-evaluate the supplements that you are taking. A very common problem for regular supplement takers is adding supplements over time. Suddenly you’re taking stuff from ten or more different bottles! The only answer until recently had been to buy separate tablets or capsules of things that most multis just don’t have enough of. Luckily, more and more companies have risen to the challenge of creating more comprehensive supplements.

Natural News May 2001 - Spring Cleaning
Just as the spring renews the growth of trees and flowers, spring seems a perfect time to renew ourselves. Many religions have rituals exhorting us to cleanse ourselves physically and spiritually during the springtime. Fasting and internal cleansing, aided by herbs and nutrients, help remove accumulated toxins.

Natural News June 2001 - Activity and Fitness
No matter how much of a slug you’ve been over the winter, chances are you have dusted off the bike, roller blades or running shoes with good intentions and sore muscles to follow. Those sore muscles don’t have to be as sore for as long, if you take advantage of some sports supplements and homeopathics that have been used for years by top athletes and weekend warriors alike.
01/18/05
Natural News July 2000 - Yeast
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations released a statement regarding the imminent demise of our ability to fight microbial diseases with antibiotics, due to worldwide misuse over the decades since their inception. Behind the stark reality that we may not always have effective recourse to fight bacterial infections is the equally problematic area of side effects from antibiotic use, primarily yeast infections.

Natural News October 2001 – Give Yourself an Immune Tune-Up
If you have been thinking that your immune system could use a bit of a tune up, then perhaps you should consider medicinal mushrooms. Throughout history, and around the world, fungi have been used to fight disease, heal wounds and promote health. Because of research done over the last few decades, especially in Asia, the former Soviet Union and Germany, the chemistry of these medicinal mushrooms is quite well mapped.

Seasonal Allergies Require Special Attention to Details
If you suffer from sinus problems, spring flowers are nothing to smile about…unless you lock yourself indoors for the duration! However, this draconian measure is unnecessary if you take steps to keep you sinuses clean and toned. David’s gives you several options toward this end.

Brain Works
Have you misplaced your keys lately? Forgotten a friend’s phone number? Or perhaps you’re back in school and find your memory needs sharpening. These problems are not uncommon. Of course, you can take them in stride to a certain extent. However you can also actively protect and improve your mental faculties.
01/18/05
Brain Works Part 2
This month we are continuing our discussion of cognitive enhancers or "smart nutrients." This is an exciting area of supplementation, because it offers such noticeable benefits with very little risk. In addition, you don’t have to wait for significant impairment to occur before starting a supplement program.
01/18/05
Echinacea
Inevitably, you and your family will be coming into contact with more people and their germs during the next few months. An herb that can help everyone, young and old, stay well is Echinacea (pronounced eka-NAY-shuh). You may know it as purple coneflower.

Focusing on Alternatives for Women's Health
As women become more knowledgeable about their bodies and feel empowered to step outside the traditional medical model, many more are finding gentle options for dealing with fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids and endometriosis. Since many women initially feel that these problems unwittingly besiege them, taking the territory back by positive actions is arguably the best way to begin healing.
01/18/05
Grains
I have spoken to many of you concerning health problems like high and low blood sugar, disorders of the digestive process, weight gain and candida infections. All of you recognize that the food we choose affects our health. This month, I am introducing you to some whole grain found in natural food stores by discussing "paste food."
01/18/05
Holiday Blues
The holidays, chilly weather and all the hustle and bustle that comes with them can be exciting. However, for many of us, shorter daylight hours, family pressures, plus the stresses of everyday life leave us feeling blue. Western medicine offers us prescription antidepressant drugs, but what other options exist?
01/18/05
Multi-Vitamins
Why should you buy a multivitamin from a health food store, instead of the grocery or pharmacy? What are you really getting and what are you missing when you buy you multiple from Lederly Labs or Squibb Pharmaceuticals? As with many other things, "you get what you pay for."
01/18/05
Multi Viatmins Part Two
Last month we began talking about multivitamins. I hope you have looked at what you take each day to see how it measures up. Buying vitamins worth taking is just the start, however. If you are counting on covering a wide range of nutrients, you may need more than just a "one-a-day." In addition, consideration of when you take your supplements is important. Reasons people take vitamins vary, but most folks starting with a one-a-day multiple end up adding other supplements.

Organic Action
Right now you can influence how food is grown in this country during the next century. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is giving the public a chance to comment on proposed national standards for organically grown foods, which includes livestock as well as plants. The current consensus within the organic farming community is that the USDA has punched some agribusiness size holes in a proposal intentionally crafted to foster an alternative to "better farming through chemistry."

Summer Tips
August is the quintessential summer vacation month. I hope you have something fun planned! Wheather it‘s a weekend at the beach or a trip to anothe country, you may be able to use some of the following information to make your time more enjoyable.

Enzyme Formula Fights Inflammation Where You'd Least Expect Its
What may be a contributor to the damage caused by heart disease, multiple sclerosis and injuries to bones and joints? Inflammation is the unlikely, if obvious, answer.

“Smart” Nutrition
Have you misplaced your keys lately? Forgotten a friend’s phone number? Or perhaps you’re back in school and find your memory needs sharpening. These problems are not uncommon. Of course, you can take them in stride to a certain extent. However you can also actively protect and improve your mental faculties.

“Smart” Nutrition - Part 2
We continue our discussion of cognitive enhancers, or “smart nutrients,” this month. Remember, you don’t have to wait for significant impairment to occur before starting a supplement program. Choosing the right supplements can yield noticeable benefits. However, it’s important to be informed concerning possible interactions or side effects, so let your doctor know in advance, if you plan to take a new supplement of any kind.

More on Allergies
Allergy season is in full swing in Maryland, now. Unfortunately, many people who have not had allergy problems previously report that they suffer after coming to the Baltimore-Washington area. For children and adults, prescription and over-the-counter medications hold out the promise of the unadulterated bliss of a spring day. However, if you have found fulfillment of this promise lacking, you are not alone.
01/18/05
Antioxidants
Antioxidants have had their day in the sun, so to speak, and now other supplements take center stage in the media, as well as on store shelves. However, antioxidants are still the important protective nutrients they have always been. Day in and day out, antioxidants diffuse harmful, unstable chemicals that would otherwise destroy our tissue. You may find it helpful to think about them as warriors with little shields stepping into harm’s way, instead of letting your cells take the hit.
