    Uses
    • It is used to put off or treat soft, brittle bones (osteoporosis).
    • It is used to treat Paget's disease.
    • Risedronate lowers bone loss.

    Dosing

    How to take

    • All products:
    • Take with a full glass of water.
    • Take with plain water only. Avoid taking with mineral water or other drinks.
    • Do not drink or eat for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug.
    • Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug. This stops irritation to the swallowing tube (esophagus).
    • Swallow tablet whole. Do not chew, break, or crush.
    • This drug works best when used with calcium/vitamin D and weight-bearing workouts like walking or PT (physical therapy).
    • Follow the diet and workout plan that your doctor told you about.
    • Fast release:
    • Take on an empty stomach before breakfast.
    • Long-acting products:
    • Take after breakfast.

    Missed Dose

    • Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
    • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
    • Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
    • Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

    Storage

    • Store at room temperature.
    • Protect from water. Do not store in a bathroom or kitchen.

    Avoid

    • If you have an allergy to risedronate or any other part of this drug.
    • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
    • If you have any of these health problems: A swallowing tube (esophagus) that is not normal, low calcium levels, very bad kidney disease, or trouble swallowing.
    • If you are not able to stand or sit up for 30 minutes.
    • If you are breast-feeding.

    Precautions

    • If you have GI (gastrointestinal) disease, talk with your doctor.
    • If you have kidney disease, talk with your doctor.
    • Have a bone density test. Talk with your doctor.
    • Check all drugs you are taking with your doctor. This drug may not mix well with some other drugs.
    • Tell dentists, surgeons, and other doctors that you use this drug.
    • Take good care of your teeth. See a dentist often.
    • Avoid beer, wine, or mixed drinks.
    • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant.

    Side Effects

    • Headache.
    • Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help.
    • Loose stools.
    • Hard stools (constipation). Drinking more liquids, working out, or adding fiber to your diet may help. Talk with your doctor about a stool softener or laxative.
    • High blood pressure.
    • Belly pain.
    • Bone, joint, or muscle pain may rarely happen.
    • A broken leg may rarely happen.
    • Harm to the jaw bone may rarely happen.

    Contact a healthcare provider

    • If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away.
    • Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
    • Chest pain.
    • Very upset stomach or throwing up.
    • Very bad belly pain.
    • Trouble swallowing.
    • Very bad jaw pain.
    • Very bad bone, joint, or muscle pain.
    • Very bad groin or thigh pain.
    • Numbness or tingling in your mouth.
    • Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet.
    • Twitching.
    • Any rash.
    • Health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

    General Statements

    • If you have a very bad allergy, wear an allergy ID at all times.
    • Do not share your drugs with others and do not take anyone else's drugs.
    • Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
    • Most drugs may be thrown away in household trash after mixing with coffee grounds or kitty litter and sealing in a plastic bag.

    • Keep a list of all your drugs (prescription, natural products, vitamins, OTC) with you. Give this list to your doctor.

    • Talk with the doctor before starting any new drug, including OTC, natural products, or vitamins.
